Treetops Hospice Care, based in Risley, provides nursing care and emotional support for adults in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The charity also supports their carers and families.
The Treetops ‘Values Awards’ were launched earlier this year, with hundreds of nominations from staff and volunteers. The awards went to volunteers who had gone above and beyond in their support and dedication to the hospice.
Angela Walters, volunteer services coordinator, presented the Values Awards as follows:
Catherine Jackson, Wellbeing Space and Reception volunteer
An asset to Treetops
“Catherine is an excellent listener and communicates well with everyone which is a vital quality in her role at Treetops where she assists with bathing patients and working on reception.
“She is friendly, approachable, popular with everyone, and an asset to Treetops.”
Jacqui Marshall, Fundraising and Reception volunteer
An inspiration
“Jacqui is an inspiration. She is warm, welcoming, very professional and efficient.
“Jacqui has successfully organised the Picnic Proms event for the last two years and is well-respected by both volunteers and staff alike. She is a great ambassador for the charity.”
Pauline and Paul Wilcox – Hospice Shop and Bike Recycling Scheme volunteers (joint winners)
A real joy to work with
“Paul and Pauline have both independently set up entrepreneurial ventures for the hospice, volunteering their time and skills to raise money for us.
“Paul runs the successful Bike Recycling Scheme, raising on average £1,000 a month for the hospice.
“Pauline re-launched the hospice shop and has created Treetops-themed and other merchandise to raise funds. Pauline also volunteers as a driver, in the Wellbeing Space and at events.
“Paul and Pauline are wonderful, generous people who are a real joy to work with.
Hilary Turner, Treetops charity shop volunteer, Melbourne
An absolute superstar
“Hilary has been involved with the shop at Melbourne for 22 years and is an absolute superstar. She is totally reliable, always willing to help and always a professional presence within the shop.

Volunteers are absolutely invaluable to the charity
Angela was delighted to be able to help present the awards:
“Our award evening kick-starts national Hospice Care Week which this year, is showcasing ‘This is What it Takes’ to deliver hospice care.
“Our volunteers are absolutely invaluable to the charity – we couldn’t deliver our services without them.
“From driving patients to and from the hospice, to welcoming people through the door on reception. They support our clinical services, serve customers in our numerous charity shops, and fundraise through events and the Lottery. We even have volunteers helping in administrative roles and at our events. They’re the lifeblood of the hospice.”

Treetops must raise over £3 million each year to run the hospice. A third of this comes from local healthcare commissioners. The remaining two thirds is raised through fundraising events, donations, Lottery memberships, shops, and gifts in wills.
