Supporting bereaved children in schools & other organisations
This 1-day course offers training to schools or similar organisations on the effects of bereavement and loss on children, young people and their families as well the impact of bereavement on the school community.
We have specifically designed training activities to help school staff appreciate a child’s developmental understanding of death and their developmental reactions to grief. The training facilitates learning around the language of death and dying, the skills of empathic listening, and outlines ways in which schools can support individual children, their family and the wider school community following a bereavement.

The training provides:
- An overview of loss, bereavement, and grief
- A description of current models of grief
- An exploration of children’s understanding of death and their developmental responses
- Key factors which help a grieving child to manage their feelings
- An experience of empathic listening skills
- Examples of positive and practical ways of supporting bereaved children
An awareness of self-care for staff
