Trauma-informed practice for those working in a therapeutic setting

Primarily designed for therapists working with adults, this three-module training would also suit allied professionals who wish to develop a trauma-informed lens through which to view the impact of traumatic experiences on those they encounter. Our examples are grounded in a bereavement setting but fully adaptable to other contexts.

This training involves 3 modules over 4 days to be completed sequentially to maximise the benefits and complete the course:

  1. An introduction to working therapeutically with children and young people
  2. Developing the creativity of the therapist
  3. An introduction to understanding and working with trauma in children and young people

This is an interactive training which aims to provide the knowledge, skills and experience to equip therapists to respond safely and effectively to trauma in a relational setting. It offers breathing and grounding techniques, strategies for psychoeducation and working with self-care kits and also includes a comprehensive reading list.

Themes covered include:

  • Trauma definitions, origins and describing trauma in a relational and developmental context
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences and their legacy
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Trauma’s impact on the brain and nervous system
  • An introduction to the Window of Tolerance and Polyvagal Theory
  • Resources for working with trauma symptoms
  • Herman’s 3-phase model and associated key concepts
  • An overview of compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burn-out
  • The importance of self-awareness and self-care
  • An introduction to the concept of trauma stewardship
